Canberra Crash Hotspots: Canberra Ave in Fyshwick Emerges as Winner

According to AAMI Crash Index, Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick is the worst spot for car crashes in ACT with 53 incidents in the past year. This is followed by Gundaroo Drive in Gungahlin and Parkes Way in Canberra coming in as 3rd place.

Canberra’s continous road works is a big factor in these crashes.

As per Reuben Aitchison (AAMI Spokesperson), changes in traffic conditions catches people by surprise or results to road rage.

“People tend to react in one of two ways; they either zone out and start thinking about what’s going to happen at work that day and they’re not focusing on what’s happening around them and that leads them to miss those important visual cues they need to avoid an accident” he stated.

“Or they get really impatient, driving right up the back of another driver and that robs them of the ability to avoid a collision, and also increases the chance of them getting hit from behind because they’re more likely to have to slam on the brakes.”

“That section of Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick, there’s been some extra roadworks in the past year there which would explain why that’s a hot spot.”

Drivers also grew complacent during the weekly commute.
