The Ford Endura will be the successor to the Territory, as confirmed by Ford Australia. The Endura, which is a large SUV, is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2018. The Endura is known as the Edge in other markets. Its name is short for “Endurance” and takes after other Ford SUV models with names that start with “E”. It was Toyota Australia who prompted the change of Endura’s name since the Japanese carmaker has used the “Edge” name for the special editions of their Yaris, RAV4, and Corolla vehicles from 2000 to 2009.
The latest SUV is expected to be unveiled at the Detroit motor show in January next year. It’s slated to feature an updated look with mechanical improvements. The six-speed ‘Powershift’ dual-clutch unit of the current Edge is expected to be replaced by a new eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. The production for the right-hand drive version of the vehicle is expected to begin in the second half of 2018.
Compared to its predecessor Territory, which has five- and seven-seat configurations, as well as petrol and diesel engines, the Endura will only have diesel power and five seats. This could pose a problem in terms of competition, since its rivals offer seven- seaters. Buyers may opt to choose the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, or Toyota Kluger over the Endura in terms of seats. Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, the Endura is expected to have the 2.0-litre ‘Duratorq’ four-cylinder powerplant employed in the United Kingdom. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but rumors are pegging it at the mid-to-high $40,000 bracket (before on-road costs) with four variants available.
