Young Shepherd Wins Land Rover Bursary

One of this year’s bursaries from Land Rover and the Prince’s Countryside Fund (PCF) was awarded to a shepherd from Devon, who also happens to be a budding entrepreneur. 21-year old Lewis Steer of Lily Warne Wool, Chudleigh got his own Land Rover Discovery Sport, which he plans to use for his daily shepherding.

Sans farming background, Lewis shears his flock, which is made of rare Greyface Dartmoor sheep, by hand and delivers his fleece to the local mill to be spun into yarn. Lily Warne Wool – named after his great great grandmother – carries the entire process from farm to yarn and is the only one in the country to do so. They aim to reconnect consumers to British wool.

Lewis is also pursuing Rural Estate Land Management at The Royal Agricultural University.

The Prince’s Countryside Fund has been enjoying support from Land Rover since 2013. The company contributes to the Fund’s annual bursary scheme and its grant-giving programme.

“They are also showing other young people that farming is an exciting, multi-dimensional career choice.
