Holden first started out as a saddlery manufacturer in 1856 and was based in South Australia. Formerly known as General Motors Holden, it eventually ventured into the automotive industry and then became a subsidiary of General Motors in 1931. The company became a beacon of national pride in the country, the source of “the car made in Australia, for Australia”.

Earlier models such as the FJ Holden, FB Holden, EH Holden, and HG Holden became very popular from the 1950s to the 1970s. But it was the Holden Commodore, launched in 1978, that became the company’s signature vehicle. The model was refined and updated up to 2013.
Latest models include the four-dour New Astra sedan (originally known as the Chevrolet Cruze), which is touted as “the best small car Holden has had in a long time” and the sixth-generation subcompact Holden Barina.
Holden will cease to manufacture vehicles in Australia in 2017 but will still continue to maintain its strong presence in the country by selling and importing vehicles. The company is currently having the largest revamp in its history and will include newer models in the SUV segment. The GM Australia Design Team will continue to design vehicles in its Port Melbourne facility.
