Volvo in Canberra

Truly global, proudly Scandinavian. This is what Volvo stands for and the company never gets tired of praising its roots. Volvo started making cars in 1927 because the company believed that no one was making vehicles that were safe or strong enough for tough Swedish roads and cold temperatures. Starting from the time their first car, the OV 4, came out of production, Volvo has produced a slew of dependable vehicles and innovations that influenced the automobile industry.

It was the company who first made the three-point safety belt. The brainchild of Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin, the safety belt was introduced into the series production PV544. Volvo waived its patent rights and as a result, other automakers used it in their cars, saving more drivers’ lives in the process. Volvo has since continued to make innovations in safety, the most recent being the Slippery Road Alert and Hazard Light Alert.

In 2013, Volvo opened its first plant in China as part of its efforts to become a premiere global brand. The plant in Chengdu produced the Volvo S60L, which is marketed specifically at the Chinese market.
